Frogs and Snails and Puppy Dogs' tails

Many months after first realising that I needed to turn my son's lilac nursery into something more appropriate for his needs, I am still ploughing through metres of fabric for the curtains, and thinking about how best to fix the room.

There are many rooms out there which look like this:

But to me these rooms lack a little personality.  Of course, children need lots of storage, which is partly why these rooms always have so much joinery.  Oh and need I mention that it makes things very very expensive?

Whilst my son's possessions in no way amount to this:

He does have quite a lot of blue and brown cars and building blocks left on the floor at the end of the day.

It is also a small room, and I am thinking about how to maximise the floor space, rather than shoving a whole lot of cupboards and drawers onto that space.

Anyway, I am finding myself less attracted to the matchy-matchy style, and much more to a hodge podge of things thrown together in an oh so casual way:

And my dream room (if I lived in a warehouse) is this one, complete with around the wall train:

It is always an issue to change a plan half way through, and I have already done curtains and chair cover in slightly matching colours.  I will now have to work on the rest of the room, including managing the challenge of storage without joinery.

Jane, it is a hard one because they grow so quickly and their tastes develop so differently to your own. I think you're wise not to do the matchy-matchy thing. Good luck with it.

I am in the process od doing my little ones room - finishing it rather... I know what i want it to look like, not to girly, not to matchy matchy and lots of clever - yet not obvious storage... i think I have looked at over 100 000 wall decals....

Some great possibilties here- I love the think and the play looks. they always need a few spots to do their own thing anywhere! good luck, await the results.

Hi! Thanks so much for coming over to my blog. I am so glad I saw this post about kids bedrooms. I have 3 boys and am never happy with their rooms! There are just too many things to come up with when you have to do 3 rooms. I wish they would all sleep together to make it easy. Good luck with yours :)

The 'think' photo, but without the 'think' is my favourite for its simplicity. I find with my children that the most useful kind of storage is long deep shelves (windowboard and nice brackets look fine) along one wall, for all the books and jigsaws and toys and so forth. With no doors, it's all easier to find and put away, and it reassures me that there's not a huge jumble out of sight. What colour did you go for with the curtains?

that pillow that the little boy is sitting on looks absolutely divine. I would toss all the toys and go with poufs instead! Although probably not a practical solution...

My son would LOVE that room with the wall train. Heck, my husband would probably want one, too! I agree about not being too matchy when decorating a kid's room. A variety of styles that some how look cohesive work well.

Before I had read Mise's comment I thought the think (that's a bit of a mouthful !!) room was the best...boyish but practical and with character. I have male and female children and it's always the males that are the most difficult to decorate for. I think that you can take elements from all of the ones you have shown, Jane. XXXX
