Winter in Melbourne - Art for the Hanging

If you spend a lot of time inside during winter staring at walls, not only do you go stir crazy, but eventually it comes to you that you should buy some art to hang.

And in winter, that means to me, landscapes.

I love the look of a landscape hanging in a pristine room, like this. In fact I just love everything about this room, but mostly its tranquillity and the fact that the painting is allowed to speak, without needing to shout.

(via Remodelista)

This is Vincent D'Onofrio's 5 storey townhouse, decorated by Jan Eleni.  If you can't have a gilded mirror above your fireplace, I think a moody landscape does just as well, if not better.

And these are some of my current favourite (living) landscape painters.  This is by Darren Gannon, represented by Libby Edwards.   The thing about landscape painting is that you cannot skate by on poor technique or low quality materials.  It really shows up your skills.

Early Start  -  2010  (oil on canvas)

This is by Geoff Dyer, a very well regarded Tasmanian painter.    Aim high, and you too can have a Dyer.   He is not a cheap artist.   But look at the depth, and indeed, emotion of that stormy sea.

Climate 1 (2009)

These little ones (not a triptych, maybe a nono-tych) are by Jennifer Shears and you can find them here on Etsy.   Aren't they exquisite?   All the different cloud moods are represented.

This is by Alexander Mackenzie, an Australian artist about whom I have previously written.

Here is another Jennifer Shears.

And these are by Swedish artist Peter Freis. I am indebted to Monika at Splendid Willow for alerting me to this wonderful artist. Born in 1947 (just like Geoff Dyer), he is represented by this gallery in Stockholm.

I hope you all have a serene Tuesday.

Hi Jane, these are all beautiful examples of landscapes. I think the paintings by Peter Freis are my faves. Absolutely stunning! Hope you are enjoying some of the winter sunshine in Melbourne today. Lee :)

It would be really tough to choose even one of these...they're are all outstanding. I guess I do lean toward MacKenzie's work, and the frame on the picture above the fireplace is as beautiful as the art piece.
Nice post. Thanks for the feast for the eyes today.

I love landscapes that are serene ethereal and in a limited color palette. It appears you enjoy the same style!

What a fine collection of paintings - I'd take the Dyer seascape if it were a Help Yourself (how disappointed I am that it isn't). Landscapes like these make me pensive, they make me think of the gradually evolving natural surroundings and our own brief stay amid them. Perhaps it's important to hang the more atmospheric of them near the liquor cabinet.

Gosh, what a nice blog. These beautiful moody pictures remind me why I should be living in Melbourne and not Sydney.

What food for the soul on a chilly day.... I am liking your winter series. I have always coveted a Geoff Dyer landscape and not just because he's also Tasmanian although we are a loyal bunch! As you say aim high...

Hi. Just popped in from La Lampshade, so glad I did! Adore these types of paintings as well. Are you familiar with the works of Luc Leestemaker? He is my fave...check him out if you get a chance!

As I started reading this gorgeous post, I was thinking to myself, I must suggest to Jane to have a look at some of Alex's work... and then I saw one of his paintings! I was so excited, as his wife is a friend of mine.

There is a gorgeous landscape painting in the Twilight movie (first one), in the Cullen house, you don't happen to know who the artist is do you? It is very similar to Alex's work and I'd love to know who the artist is.

Absolutely gorgeous. I would happily take any one of these over my fireplace. Moodly landscapes make me much happier than gilded gold. Though I love the latter as well....
