Re Spiced.

We all have those lists in the back of our minds, little things we think 'I must pick that up if I come across it'.

I have had spice jars on that list for many years.  Literally years.   Small jars may seem like a simple enough thing to find.  But they had to be glass.  And the opening had to be wide enough to fit a tablespoon measure.   And they had to have nice plain lids.

On the weekend I found my Holy Grail.

These jars, from Scullerymade ($19 for 10). If you live in Melbourne I urge you to visit this amazing copper pot, silicon mould and all things kitchen filled shop.  You will not leave empty handed.

I needed these jars because until yesterday, my spice drawer looked like this:

And now, it looks like this:

I like them so much in their pristine glassy state that I don't even want to label them.  But as a courtesy to the other members of the house it is probably the right thing to do.  And I do find cumin and coriander look quite alike.

Now my spice drawer resembles a colourful science laboratory filled with mineral sands

I am well aware that the pleasure this clean out gave me is beyond reason and out of all proportion.  I can't explain it.  It just is.

I am envious, Jane. My spices are in a sad state. I would be on top of the world too if I had such a neat and tidy arrangement.

Oh I've taken vicarious out-of-proportion-pleasure out of your photos! What wonderful order. I've found that dry erase markers are a nice way to label things like this. The writing stays reasonably well in place but you can wipe it off without too much trouble if you decide to change up your spice collection...

I understand how much joy this gives you. It is not out of proportion at all - in my mind anyway! I am spring cleaning (in autumn and it may take most of winter too) and that pleasure I get quite "beyond reason" is why I'm doing it!

...and its important with spices to buy small quantities often rather than huge in bulk ones that loose there flavour. Your shelf looks glorious.

I find myself agreeing with your blog posts so often. I love glass spice jars too. That little lone one on the left in your before post - that's what I have to store my spices in. I think they're lab quality - the sort you normally see foot scrubs and hand balms sold in. They have been fantastic and just the right size to store a spice sachet's contents in.
I second the recommendation to go to scullery made - a great store.

HI Jane
Well I fully understand the pleasure.. that's not to say my cupboards are organized.. ahahah.. but the clean uniform look really pleases the eye and .... maybe it's just the joy of having control over some part of our lives.. hahahaha I have collected for some unknown reason .. trillions of Moccona jars... why I don't know.. maybe I should fill them with spices... or mineral sand!! i just like the look of repetition.. .. Have a great week xxx Julie

I understand the pleasure from organizing and finding things on your want list. I too purchased many spice jars and sadly, they still look like your before photo. That's what constant renovation has done to my kitchen pantry. I saw on a Blog post somebody had spice jars filled with buttons which looked very cute. xx

That pleasure beyond reason and out of all proportion I get just by looking at such organisation, though I admit it must be diluted compared with having actually created it as you did. Meant to tell you as well that sliced tomato with olive oil on toast has really grown on me since you mentioned it.

Dear Jane,
I think that most peoples spices look like your before picture....I know mine does !! It's amazing what $19 can do, isn't it ? I bet you keep going to have a look at it !! haha
You have now made me reevaluate my own spice situation !!!!
Enjoy the new week, Jane. XXXX

I absolutely get it! I just recently cleaned out my spice cupboard-and have been thinking a drawer would work so much better in locating what I wanted to use.
I would have to completely rearrange my kitchen for that drawer... but I will keep my eyes open for these little jars-which would be very handy for some things.

I can so relate to this Jane. My spice shelf is upside down at the moment. You are so right, it has to be just the right jar and you have found it!

There is nothing like a good clean out. There are time when it makes you feel like a new woman!!

Jeanne :)

No need to explain at all. This is just the kind of thing that gets me giddy with happiness. It looks amazing and I'm totally jealous.
