A hankering for an inside tree

I wonder when exactly it was that indoor plants fell out of fashion?  I know that people still have them but do you remember exactly how ubiquitous they were?  Palms especially.  And maidenhair ferns.  And what about those hanging baskets made of some kind of barky moss?

I really like the idea of an inside tree.  It must be sculptural and dramatic.    I think it is one of those 'I had one in my childhood home therefore must have one now' impulses.  I will try to control it for a few days I think.

Some musician's room (I assume)

This tree is thriving.   To say the least.

Awful blatherglam name check living room in Reed and Delphine Krakoff's home.  But I like the plants.

Most of the big leaved trees above are figs.  Not sure how available they are in Australia though.  I went off to the nursery yesterday and found these:

Umbrella Tree.  Grows outside in Queensland.  Inside in Melbourne.   Nice big leaves. Maybe a bit spindly?

Palm.  Pretty basic.  But nice big leaves.   And unkillable.

And this is the spot I have in mind.  Once the lamp and chair are moved.  Stay tuned for the purchase

That's a great post! I remember when indoor plants and trees were huge, and yes... you rarely see them now. We don't have any, but our house is so small, it would need to be a teeeenny little baby tree! I keep my eye out, but I haven't found anything that really gets me going! I'm looking forward to seeing your updated look + greenery. :)

Can't wait to see your indoor tree, and which one you choose. In fact, you may inspire me to do the same.

I'm a huge advocate for the indoor plant ... but light! Lots of light!

Indoor plants remind me of the best Woody Allen films of the 70s. Maybe you can call your plant 'Woody Allen'.

Oh that's the perfect spot for a tree. I like that basic palm image best. We have umbrella trees sprouting left right and centre in our yard. They get way too big and invasive, so we dig them out. They do have a gorgeous glossy leaf and always look healthy though. Can't wait to see what you decide upon.

It would be a perfect spot for it. Looking forward to see your "after" picture. I do love indoor plants.

An interesting thought, Jane. I've tended so many maidenhair ferns over the years - such temperamental dainties. And I had an umbrella tree in my offic once which also required a bit too much TLC. Or maybe I just killed it with kindness by over-watering it. Hmm. I'm intrigued to see what you settle on. J x

Hi Jane
I used to have an inside tree.. his name was Fred.. poor guy lasted years and years but finally hated one place I lived and gave up the ghost..

I'd take the tree and the interiors of that first shot!! fabulous... even the second too!!! and I think the spot you have picked out should look lovely with a tree.... look forward to seeing the results.. Have a great week.. xxx Julie

Looking forward to seeing what you think of yours.

I want one for our house, too. But we have low natural light and I tend to obliterate anything that produces chlorophyll.

I just did a post called PPL that talks about plants being one of the cheapest decorating tools in your arsenal you can read it here if you like

I think plants bring a room to life, great post, Kathysue

You set the trend Jane & we'll follow.
Millie ^_^
P.S. MOTH would have grapevines growing inside in a heartbeat if I left him for George!

We are completely surrounded by the bush but also have I don't know what they are called, but the leaves are smooth shiny and dark, gorgeous green, when it rains, we rush to put them all outside. I love them insides the house.

I have killed plants both inside and out... have just spent the day in the garden exercising my brown thumb... I love your inspiration pics but I will leave it there! I wish you better luck!

They're available in Straya. At least if they're the Fiddle Leaf figs they look like. I have one. Sydney is crawling with them in the last few months - houseplants are the big new thing and these plants are it. Bloody expensive though.

I have a grand old yucca that will reach the ceiling any minute now, and I'll be sad when it does as I don't want to put it out - it's a very benign presence in the snug, and gets pink lights at Christmas.

And I still love your curved chair.

OMG! DON'T buy an Umbrella Tree. Those things are bastards! Total pests here in Queensland and I'm sure they're hardy enough to grow anywhere. Their root systems are like heat seeking missiles except their targets are water ... water in your drain pipes, water in your sewerage pipes, water in your pool, damp in your Hawthorn Brick, etc ... get my drift? And if you're like me and either get tired of an indoor plant or half kill it and then decide to "set it free" (i.e. stick it in the ground outside) it will thrive there.

I don't know what to say. This blog is fantastic.
That's not really a really huge statement, but its all I could come up with after reading this.

The inside tree makes the place more beautiful. You have a great place of living. :)
