Tree Search Completed

I found a tree at Going Going Green in Hawthorn.

I decided against umbrella trees on the basis that they are an evil profligate weed type thing in Queensland.  Thanks for the tips Anita and Littlemissairgap.

I decided against a palm on the basis that every time I looked at one I had an uncontrollable urge to listen to Willie Nelson and Neil Diamond (my mother's favourite singers to play during her 1970's parties) and eat lots of pineapple chicken and salmon mousse and steak Diane.

I decided for ficus on the basis that it was the only tree suitable for indoors in the whole nursery, and you know how I hate to leave any place to which I have made a Special Trip empty handed.  Plus which, Rouge told me that Sydney is crawling with fig trees at the moment so I thought I would follow the crowd (it's easier and less risky than setting trends).

Here it is, Woody Allen, in his sunny little corner.   They don't like the cold so I figure it will at least last until next April.   There is still quite a lot of room above for it to grow up and indeed out if it needs to.

This room is in the front of the house and I may be spending some more time in here, because this is what I have to confront every time I leave the children to their own devices in the back of the house for more than 5 minutes:

(Explanation: this highly engineered and delicately balanced construction comprises almost all of the couch cushions which have been flung off willy nilly and used to construct a dungeon in which my son can sit and make his Lego robots.  And you may not be aware of this but Cushion Dungeons MUST remain intact for all of the daylight hours, unless you want to be subjected to banshee screaming and floods of salty tears.)

I love your tree and the basket.

Are you calling it Woody Allen?

Inside trees are very 'Annie Hall' ... you could call your hallway, 'Annie Hall' and build a neurotic, satirical theme.

Not sure what you'd call the cushion dungeon though.

Hi Jane,
Well, this is all par for the course.....our children are 31 and 29 and the house still looks as if a bomb has hit it when they visit us !!
Good luck with your fig tree....it looks pretty sturdy, so you're in with a good chance....keep us posted on it's progress !! XXXX

I will stay well away from your ficus indoorius to give it the best chance at life.

We don't have enough cushions for dungeon dwellers but we have salty tears by the bucket. Fun isn't it?

Perfect choice! My sister just bought one of these recently and we have been thinking of getting exactly the same plant for our downstairs family room.

I am a big believer in plants in the home, especially when you look at studies that show house house plants can help improve air quality. The school where I use to work invested in lots of plants for offices and staff rooms after we read that plants can remove about 80 percent of air toxins in a day!

Happy Wednesday and best wishes for a great week,
Natasha.

Can I just say that is a fine looking tree you have chosen. I love its large leaves. Your little one is a champion dungeon master! Very cute.

Aww, I have fond memories of making cubbies out of cushions and sheets with my brother and it cheers me no end to see my two doing it together now. Not so much with the good couch cushions though! The ficus is gorgeous and a great choice, umbrella trees are nasty weeds in Sydney as well!

Woody Allen is picture perfect. Looks great, especially with the pot.

Did they clone my son and give him to you? They even crazily look alike and Lego blocks and forts are how we roll on a daily basis.

I think you have the brother to mine.

I haven't noticed that they're *quite* as neurotic as Woody Allen. And I know Sydney doesn't (unfortunately) get anything resembling a proper winter, but mine has survived quite happily all through the quasi-winter here with no loss of leaf. No visits to the analyst either.

One thing I have noticed is that they require a lot less water than I'd have thought.

Good luck with yours.

Excellent choice! I've been wanting a fig tree for ages. Unfortunately my sickly umbrella tree has been hanging on for dear life so I've got nowhere to put a new one...

Hello Jane - your tree is a marvelous pick but not as marvelous as your wee-man. Oh I so remember the forts built from sofa cushions. Those were the days! That & walking on legos in your sock feet.

Hope you all are doing very well? xx

Mum's had a ficus for years in the kitchen. If it has light and warmth, it will love you forever and keep on growing and growing - abit like Alice in Wonderland. Mum's is growing horizontally now. It's great. The kitchen is almost becoming like Max's room in "Where the Wild Things are".

Ooo, I like the fig. Nobody does indoor figs here. I must try it. (Dumb American Question: Will it make fruit?)
